Just a check-in

Rep 8 Arc: What You Are Feeding

An empty office meeting room at dusk: two chairs pulled close at a small table, two mugs left behind, a clock on the wall. Text reads: I gave her a highlight.

He goes first

Monday. The weekend had given me a small break from the drama at work, but I could already feel everything I had left half-finished on Friday waiting for me.

The company is under strain. There is a lot of anxiety and a lot of questions, and the leaders are not listening to the suggestions being put to them.

One colleague is holding the fort with me. They understand exactly why everyone is anxious, and they are as frustrated as I am that nobody above us is listening.

We meant to check in for fifteen minutes. Then someone put their head round the door to remind me about my next meeting, and I realised an hour had gone.

It moved so easily. One conversation into the next, and none of it felt like effort.

That evening Sharlene asked how my day was. I gave her a highlight.

Most of that hour did not make it in. Not because I was hiding it. It just never came up.

The conversation I had that morning was the one I should have had at home that evening. I had already had it with someone else.

Your turn. Nobody sees this.

Is there someone you talk to more easily than your wife?

No name, no login, no email address. One tap.

These are the real answers from the men who opened this week. No name, no email address, no IP address is stored, and no cookie is set.

The turn

Nothing happened. That is the point of this one. It never starts with something happening.

It starts with ease. Fifteen minutes becomes an hour and nobody notices, because nothing in it was hard.

And it is rarely about attraction. Men understand attraction and can usually hold it. The pull is being understood: someone who sees the same problem you see, is frustrated by the same people, and needs none of it explained. Under pressure, that feels like relief, and a man drifts towards relief.

So the test is not whether you did anything. It is whether the real version of your day went to someone else, and home got the highlight.

Not lied about. Just not mentioned.

That decision is the whole thing. Everything else is downstream of it.

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Proverbs 6:27, KJV

Nothing has happened. That is not the same as nothing is happening.

The rep

One rep. This week.

This week, when she asks about your day, give her the hour, not the highlight.

Not as a confession. As a habit of telling her things.
