A corner for married men
Willing
He goes first
Last week, in our morning devotion, the subject was the last couple of weeks. The late nights. The pushing through.
It made me say what was actually driving it. The need to be the provider. To push harder, so there would be more.
That is not what Sharlene is asking of me. She would rather have me present, in bed, talking, going to sleep together, and we manage with the money we have.
She told me she appreciated knowing. Without the reason, it just looked like I would rather sit behind my computer than be in bed with her.
Has it been a total switch? No. There have still been nights I went later than I should have.
But something has shifted. It is a start.

The turn
I called it work. I said I was fine. I said I was coming in a little while.
None of those was a lie I would be ashamed of. Each one just bought me a way out of a moment.
Last week I said the true one instead. It was not complicated. It was only harder to say.
Six weeks in, here is what I have got. Nothing about a marriage improves on its own. Left alone it drifts, and not dramatically. Nobody shouts. Nobody does anything wrong. It just quietly becomes two people who are polite and busy.
Ephesians says endeavouring. That is an effort word. Unity is not what happens when two people avoid conflict. It is what happens when somebody keeps deciding to show up.
I am not asking you to be perfect. I have not managed it. I am asking whether you are willing.
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3, KJV
Endeavouring. It is not a feeling. It is a decision you make again.
The rep
One rep. This week.
This week, tell her the reason. Pick the one thing she keeps asking you about, the late nights, the quiet, the phone, and tell her what is actually driving it.
Not a defence. The reason.
