Shared Vision and Shared Goals

Day 1 of 21 · Sunday 6 September 2026

Scripture reading

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”

Luke 14:28, KJV

Teaching lesson

They worked hard and kept life moving.

They paid bills, handled responsibilities, and each week brought another decision.

Yet when they spoke about the future, they discovered that they had been moving without discussing where they were going.

One spouse imagined a quieter life with fewer demands. The other was pursuing opportunities that would require more time, sacrifice, and change.

Neither desire was necessarily wrong.

But they had not stopped long enough to ask what they wanted to build together.

Jesus spoke about a person who intended to build a tower and first sat down to count the cost. His words teach the wisdom of considering the purpose, requirements, and direction of what we build.

Marriage also needs thoughtful direction.

A couple can be busy without being united. They can make many good individual choices while slowly creating two separate lives.

Building together begins with a shared question: What kind of marriage, home, and future are we asking God to help us create?

The answer should reach beyond possessions, achievements, or appearances.

Consider the atmosphere you want in your home, the values you want to protect, the way you want to treat each other, and the purpose you want your marriage to serve.

Shared direction does not require both spouses to have identical dreams.

It requires honest conversation, prayer, and a willingness to make room for what matters deeply to each person.

Your vision may change as seasons change. Health, work, family responsibilities, or unexpected opportunities may require adjustment.

But adjustment is easier when both spouses remember what they are building and why it matters.

You do not need every detail today.

Begin by sitting down together, inviting God into the conversation, and choosing the direction in which you want to walk.

Together

Your challenge

Complete this sentence together: "With God's help, we want to build a marriage and home that…" Choose three words that describe the atmosphere, values, or purpose you want to cultivate.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have I been making important choices according to my own plans without considering what my spouse believes we are building together?

Prayer focus

“Father, give us wisdom to consider what we are building. Bring our hopes, decisions, and priorities into agreement with Your will. Help us create a marriage and home that honour You and strengthen those entrusted to our care. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
