Aligning Our Values

Shared Vision and Shared Goals
Day 3 of 21 · Tuesday 8 September 2026
Scripture reading
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15, KJV
Teaching lesson
The disagreement appeared to be about a calendar.
One spouse wanted to protect time at home. The other felt responsible for saying yes whenever relatives, work, or church needed help.
Both could explain their position.
But beneath the schedule was a deeper question about what their household valued most.
Values shape decisions before they ever reach the table.
They influence how we use money, respond to pressure, practise faith, handle commitments, and decide what receives our best energy.
Joshua called the people to choose whom they would serve. Then he made a clear declaration about the direction of his own house.
His words remind us that a household's values must become more than good intentions.
They must be chosen and practised.
A husband and wife may share many beliefs while arranging their lives around different priorities.
One may value financial security so deeply that rest and connection are repeatedly postponed. The other may value peace so strongly that necessary conversations are avoided.
Even a good value can become unbalanced when it is separated from wisdom.
Aligning values begins by naming what guides your choices.
Ask what faithfulness, family, generosity, honesty, rest, hospitality, growth, and service should look like in your present season.
You may discover areas of strong agreement.
You may also uncover expectations that have never been discussed.
Do not treat every difference as disloyalty. Listen to the story, conviction, or fear beneath the value your spouse is protecting.
Then bring those priorities before God together.
Shared values should help both spouses know what the marriage will say yes to and what it must lovingly decline.
When your stated values and daily choices agree, your home gains clarity and your decisions become easier to make as a team.
Choose what will guide your house, then practise that choice consistently.
Together
Your challenge
Separately choose five values you believe should guide your marriage and household. Compare your lists, discuss what each word means in practice, and agree on three shared priorities for this season.
On your own
To reflect on
- Which value do I claim is important but regularly neglect through the way I use my time, attention, or resources?
Prayer focus
“Father, help us choose values that honour You and strengthen our marriage. Show us where our habits contradict what we say matters. Give us humility to listen, wisdom to agree, and courage to live by our shared convictions. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
