Growing Together, Not Apart · Day 9 of 21
Getting to Know Who You Are Today

Scripture reading
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Romans 12:2, KJV
Teaching lesson
For years, he had spoken about success in terms of the next promotion.
When an opportunity finally came, his wife expected him to be excited. Instead, he was uncertain. He had begun to value time, meaningful work, and a steadier pace differently.
She wondered whether he had lost his ambition. He struggled to explain that his understanding of a good life was changing.
They were looking at the same opportunity through different versions of the person he had been.
Paul calls believers to be transformed through the renewing of the mind, so they can discern God's will. Following Christ involves allowing Him to reshape our thinking and what we value.
That renewal can affect the decisions we make and the priorities we carry into marriage.
Getting to know your spouse today means listening for those developing convictions. What have they learned? What matters more deeply now? What are they reconsidering in the light of faith and experience?
Some changes will feel welcome. Others may unsettle you, especially if you have built expectations around a familiar answer.
Give the conversation room before reaching a conclusion.
Your spouse may still be finding words for what is happening within them. They may need to think aloud without every unfinished thought becoming a decision you must immediately accept or oppose.
If you are the person changing, help your spouse understand. Share the experiences, prayers, and questions behind the change. Do not expect them to follow a journey they have never been invited to hear about.
New desires still need discernment. Consider whether they reflect wisdom and faithfulness, and speak honestly about their effect on your shared life.
You can remain open while asking thoughtful questions.
Let the Lord renew your thinking about each other too. The person you married has a history you treasure and a present life you are still being invited to know.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Each share one belief, priority, or interest that has changed in recent years and explain what helped shape that change. Ask one question to understand, without rushing to decide what must happen next.
On your own
To reflect on
- When my spouse expresses a changing priority, do I try to understand it or quickly compare it with who they used to be?
Prayer focus
“Lord, renew our minds and help us discern Your will. Give us courage to share what You are teaching us and patience to understand each other's changing priorities. Keep our growth rooted in truth, faithfulness, and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
