Making Room for a New Season

The garden in the first rain of the wet season, the cedar trellis and watering cans glistening under a grey sky.

Scripture reading

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”

Ecclesiastes 3:1, KJV

Teaching lesson

Their evenings had changed since her mother began needing more help.

There were calls to return, appointments to arrange, and visits that sometimes lasted longer than expected. He missed their unhurried time together. She missed it too, but felt guilty whenever another responsibility needed her attention.

Both were grieving something about the life they had known. Neither had found a way to say it without making the other feel blamed.

A new season can arrive before a couple feels ready for it.

Ecclesiastes recognises that life contains different times and purposes. There are seasons of building and releasing, activity and stillness, laughter and tears. We cannot expect every part of life to remain as it was.

Marriage is lived within those changes.

A new role, a quieter home, increasing responsibilities, or a change in health may affect what each spouse can give. Even a welcome transition can bring an unexpected sense of loss.

Making room for a new season begins with acknowledging what has changed and how it feels.

You may be thankful for an opportunity and still miss the rhythm you once shared. You may love the people who need your care and still feel tired. These feelings deserve an honest conversation.

Listen for the loss beneath your spouse's frustration. What do they miss? What feels unfamiliar? What part of the change are they still trying to understand?

Then consider what connection can look like now. Perhaps a long evening together becomes a short, protected conversation. Perhaps responsibilities need to be shared differently so both people can rest.

Keep the adjustment realistic, and revisit it as the season unfolds.

The pattern that served you before may need to change. The care you show each other can remain steady through that adjustment.

Ask God for wisdom to receive the present honestly. You can honour what you miss while learning how to love well within the life before you.

Put it into practice

Together

Your challenge

Each complete the sentence, "In this season, I miss… and I need…" Listen without defending the circumstances, then agree on one small adjustment that will help you remain connected this week.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Am I expecting my spouse to give in the same way as before without considering what this season now requires of them?

Prayer focus

“Father, help us understand the season we are in. Give us tenderness towards what each of us misses and wisdom for what needs to change. Teach us to care for one another within our present responsibilities and to make room for connection. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
