Intentional Love · Day 13 of 21
Giving Our Marriage a Place in Our Priorities

Scripture reading
“The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.”
Proverbs 21:5, KJV
Teaching lesson
When they compared their plans for the coming week, nearly every evening was already committed. Each activity seemed reasonable on its own. Together, the commitments left little room for rest or time with each other.
Their marriage mattered to them. Their plans had simply been made one request at a time.
This can happen when we respond to each demand without considering the whole. We intend to care for our relationship, but we expect that care to fit into whatever remains.
Proverbs contrasts diligent thought with haste. It describes the wisdom of considered effort rather than hurried decisions. The verse is a general wisdom principle, not a promise that careful planning will remove every difficulty.
It invites us to pause and think about how our choices work together.
For a married couple, this includes considering the effect of a new commitment before saying yes. What time and energy will it require? Will it add to a season that is already demanding? Have we discussed the impact on both of us?
Giving marriage a place in our priorities does not erase the needs of children, work or other responsibilities. It means recognising that the relationship also needs care within those realities.
Begin by looking together at what is already on your calendar. Notice where one spouse is carrying more than the other realised. Ask what can be shared, simplified or reconsidered.
A small adjustment may create welcome breathing room. You might reduce an optional commitment, make a decision together before accepting an invitation or leave one evening less crowded.
Let this be a shared conversation. Avoid using the calendar to prove who cares more. Both of you may be trying to meet real needs with limited energy.
Today, bring your plans before God and ask for wisdom. Consider how you can make room for your marriage in the week ahead. Give that intention a practical place among the decisions you are making together.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Review the coming week's commitments together. Identify one realistic adjustment that would leave more capacity for your marriage, and agree on who will take the next step to make it happen.
On your own
To reflect on
- Do I consider how my commitments affect our marriage before I agree to them?
Prayer focus
“Heavenly Father, give us wisdom as we consider our responsibilities and plans. Help us hear each other's needs and make thoughtful decisions together. Show us where to simplify, where to share the load and how to give our marriage attentive care. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
