Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse

Day 8 of 21 · Sunday 23 August 2026

Scripture reading

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”

Hebrews 6:10, KJV

Teaching lesson

He noticed the major accomplishments.

A promotion, a completed project, or an important problem solved always received recognition.

But the smaller strengths often passed quietly.

The patience she showed when the day became difficult. The way he remained dependable when no one was watching. The calm response, thoughtful message, remembered detail, or willingness to help again.

These things rarely felt large enough to celebrate.

Yet they were helping hold the marriage together.

Hebrews reminds us that God does not forget work and labour shown through love. What people overlook, God sees. This should shape the way we notice our spouse too.

Marriage is strengthened by many qualities that do not attract attention.

Consistency.

Kindness.

Self-control.

A willingness to keep trying.

Small strengths become easy to miss because they appear regularly. We begin expecting them rather than appreciating them.

But what is ordinary may still be costly.

Your spouse may be showing courage by facing another demanding day. They may be choosing gentleness while carrying private pressure. They may be serving the family in ways that have become almost invisible.

Celebration does not require exaggeration or public applause.

Sometimes it is a sincere sentence: "I noticed how patiently you handled that."

It is pausing long enough to name the quality behind the action.

Do not compare your spouse's strength with someone else's. A quiet strength does not become less valuable because it looks different from what you expected.

Look closely at the person beside you.

There may be goodness you have benefited from for years without giving it a name.

Celebrate the small strengths.

They may be part of God's quiet daily provision for your marriage.

Together

Your challenge

Name two small strengths you have noticed in your spouse recently. Give one specific example of each and explain how those qualities bless your marriage.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What quiet strength in my spouse have I begun expecting instead of receiving with gratitude?

Prayer focus

“Father, give us attentive and grateful hearts. Help us notice the quiet strengths, faithful effort, and labour of love within our marriage. Teach us to celebrate each other sincerely and without comparison. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
