The Foundation of Communication

Loving Your Spouse When You Feel Like Walking Away

Day 5 of 21 · Wednesday 15 April 2026

By Sharlene Findley-Stewart · 1 minute read

Scripture reading

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”

James 1:19, KJV

Teaching lesson

Communication is not just about talking; it is about connection.

A husband once said, “We talk every day, but it feels like we’re not hearing each other.”His wife responded, “Because you’re always trying to fix things instead of listening.”

This is a common pattern.

Many couples communicate frequently, but not effectively. Conversations become:

Defensive

Reactive

Surface-level

The issue is not the amount of communication; it is the quality.

Healthy communication requires:

Clarity

Calmness

Intentional listening

In many marriages, the real breakdown is not disagreement; it is misunderstanding.

Consider this:

A wife says, “You never help around the house.”What she may really mean is: “I feel overwhelmed and unsupported.”

But if the husband hears criticism instead of emotion, he responds defensively, and the cycle continues.

Communication improves when we learn to hear what is underneath the words.

Together

Your challenge

Have a 10-minute conversation where one speaks and the other listens without interrupting.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Do I listen to respond, or to understand?
  • How do I typically react when I feel criticised?

Prayer focus

“Pray for patience, understanding, and improved communication.”

With love and prayer,Sharlene
