Speaking with Clarity and Respect

Loving Your Spouse When You Feel Like Walking Away

Day 6 of 21 · Thursday 16 April 2026

By Sharlene Findley-Stewart · 1 minute read

Scripture reading

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1, KJV

Teaching lesson

It is possible to be right, and still damage your marriage.

A wife once expressed frustration about her husband’s lack of involvement at home. Everything she said was valid. The issue was not her message; it was how it was delivered.

Her tone was sharp. Her words were harsh. Her timing was poor.

The result?Instead of hearing her concern, her husband shut down.

In marriage, how something is said often carries more weight than what is said.

Many conflicts escalate not because of the issue itself, but because of the delivery.

Communication must be done with love and respect, or it quickly becomes destructive.

Think about this scenario:

Instead of saying,“You never listen to me,”

try,“I feel unheard when I’m speaking, and I need your attention.”

Same issue.Different outcome.

Clarity reduces confusion.Respect reduces defensiveness.

Together

Your challenge

Rephrase one complaint into a calm and respectful statement.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Does my tone build connection or create distance?
  • Do I focus more on being heard or being understood?

Prayer focus

“Pray for gentle speech and wisdom in communication.”

With love and prayer,Sharlene
