Turning Our Hope for Marriage Into Action

Scripture reading

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

James 1:22, KJV

Teaching lesson

They both wanted their marriage to feel closer. They had spoken about it often and agreed that things needed to change. Yet when they tried to describe what either of them would do differently tomorrow, the conversation became less certain.

A shared hope becomes easier to act on when we give it a clear next step.

James urges his readers to do what God's word says rather than merely hearing it. In the verses that follow, he describes the person who hears without acting as someone who looks in a mirror and then forgets what they have seen.

As this devotional draws towards its close, his words invite us to consider how we are responding to what we have read.

Perhaps a particular day helped you recognise a habit that needs attention. You may have noticed how often you interrupt, delay an apology or leave a kind thought unspoken. That awareness gives you somewhere specific to begin.

Choose one area within your responsibility. Describe the action in ordinary terms: 'When you begin telling me about your day, I will put my phone aside.' A clear action helps your spouse understand your intention and helps you recognise whether you are following through.

Invite your spouse's perspective without asking them to manage your change. They may help you see whether the action would meet the concern you are trying to address.

Be patient about the result. One changed response may not immediately alter a familiar pattern between you. Keep listening and allow your actions to demonstrate sincerity over time.

If you repeatedly find yourselves unable to move forward on an important concern, seeking appropriate support can itself be a faithful next step. Hope can include being willing to receive help.

Today, thank God for one thing you have learnt during these weeks. Ask for the grace to practise it in a concrete way. Let your hope for marriage guide a choice you can actually make today.

Put it into practice

Together

Your challenge

Each complete this sentence: 'Because I want our marriage to grow, today I will…' Name one specific action within your control and carry it out. Afterwards, reflect on what you learnt by doing it.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Which lesson from this devotional is asking for a change in my actions, rather than simply my agreement?

Prayer focus

“Heavenly Father, thank You for what You have helped us recognise. Give us courage to act on what we have learnt and humility to receive help where we need it. Guide our next steps so that our hope becomes patient, practical care. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
