Enjoying Your Spouse’s Personality

Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse
Day 10 of 21 · Tuesday 25 August 2026
Scripture reading
“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,”
Philippians 1:3, KJV
Teaching lesson
She was expressive and could turn an ordinary story into an event.
He was quieter, noticing details others often missed.
Early in their relationship, these qualities felt refreshing. Over time, the same traits occasionally became sources of irritation.
Her enthusiasm felt like too much.
His quietness felt like too little.
Familiarity can cause us to stop enjoying the personality of our spouse and begin trying to edit it.
Paul told the Philippians that he thanked God whenever he remembered them. Gratitude changes the way we hold another person in our thoughts.
Your spouse's personality is not an inconvenience to manage.
Their humour, energy, thoughtfulness, creativity, steadiness, tenderness, curiosity, or sense of adventure may be part of the gift God has placed within your marriage.
Enjoyment does not require identical personalities.
It begins by recognising what is life-giving in the person beside you.
The expressive spouse may bring warmth. The quiet spouse may create calm. The planner may provide security. The spontaneous spouse may help the marriage remain flexible and open to joy.
Every strength can be used unwisely, and every person still needs maturity.
Personality should never be used to excuse disrespect, irresponsibility, control, or behaviour that causes harm.
But not every difference needs correction.
Sometimes your spouse needs the freedom to be themselves without feeling that your preferred temperament is the standard.
Notice what makes them smile. Invite the stories they enjoy telling. Allow their personality to contribute something you could not create alone.
You do not have to enjoy every habit to enjoy the person.
Thank God for the qualities that make your spouse recognisably themselves.
Let appreciation make room for delight again.
Together
Your challenge
Tell your spouse three personality traits you enjoy and how each one adds something valuable to your life or marriage. Let the moment remain free from correction.
On your own
To reflect on
- Have I been enjoying my spouse's personality, or quietly pressuring them to become more like me?
Prayer focus
“Father, thank You for the unique person beside me. Help me appreciate the personality, strengths, and perspective You have given my spouse. Remove unfair comparison and restore genuine enjoyment between us. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
