Intentional Love · Day 1 of 21
When Love Starts Running on Autopilot

Scripture reading
“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
1 John 3:18, KJV
Teaching lesson
The day had been full. They had discussed the bills, decided what to cook and reminded each other about tomorrow's appointment. Yet, as they settled into bed, she realised that they had hardly spoken about how either of them was feeling.
They had managed the day together. Somewhere along the way, they had missed each other.
This can happen in a marriage without either person intending it. Familiar routines help a household function, but they can also make us less attentive to the person sharing our life. We begin to assume that love is understood because we are still here, doing what needs to be done.
John's words invite us to examine how love becomes visible. In the verses before today's reading, he speaks about responding to a brother's need. Love moves beyond what we say and reaches into what we actually do.
That invitation belongs in our homes too.
Your spouse may know that you love them and still need to experience your interest today. A familiar greeting can become a moment of connection when you pause, look up and allow time for an answer.
Being intentional begins with noticing. Has your spouse been unusually quiet? Have they mentioned something important that you have not asked about again? Is there a small kindness you keep meaning to offer?
These questions are an invitation to pay attention, not a reason to condemn yourself. Every couple has days when energy is low and responsibilities are demanding. God's grace meets us there and helps us choose our next response.
You do not have to change everything this morning. Begin with one ordinary moment that usually passes unnoticed. Let your spouse experience your presence in it.
As we begin these twenty-one days, ask God to help you recognise the opportunities already within reach. Today, let one loving intention become something your spouse can actually receive.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Each choose one routine moment today, such as greeting each other or sharing a meal. Give it your undivided attention and offer one thoughtful act of care. Afterwards, share what you appreciated about that moment.
On your own
To reflect on
- Where have I begun to assume that my spouse knows I care, without taking time to show it?
Prayer focus
“Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunity to love each other today. Open our eyes to the moments we often overlook. Help us move from good intentions to thoughtful action, and teach us to offer our attention with patience and sincerity. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
