Admiring Growth, Not Only Perfection

Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse
Day 17 of 21 · Tuesday 1 September 2026
Scripture reading
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9, KJV
Teaching lesson
The change was not complete.
He still became defensive at times, but he was learning to pause and listen. She still struggled to communicate a need directly, but she was beginning to speak before resentment accumulated.
Their growth was imperfect.
It was also real.
Ecclesiastes teaches that two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour. Marriage includes shared labour: learning, adjusting, healing, and becoming more mature together.
When we admire only flawless results, we may overlook the courage required to take another small step.
Growth often appears gradually.
It may look like an apology offered sooner, a difficult conversation handled more gently, a boundary respected, a responsibility accepted, or help finally requested.
These moments deserve recognition.
Admiring growth does not mean lowering wise standards or pretending that repeated harm is acceptable. A small improvement does not erase the need for accountability, safety, restitution, or sustained change where serious patterns exist.
But in ordinary areas of development, constant comparison with perfection can discourage the very progress we hope to see.
Your spouse may be working against habits formed long before the marriage. They may be learning emotional skills they were never taught or rebuilding confidence after years of failure.
Notice the labour, not only the distance remaining.
Say, "I see the effort you are making." Explain what has changed and how it is helping the relationship.
Do not claim ownership of your spouse's growth or present yourself as the person who finally fixed them. Honour belongs to God, who works within hearts, and to the spouse who is choosing responsibility.
Marriage becomes more hopeful when both people know that progress will be recognised.
Admiration can become sunlight on new growth: not forcing change, but helping what is healthy continue to strengthen.
Together
Your challenge
Identify one area where your spouse has grown during the past year. Describe the change, acknowledge the effort involved, and explain how it has blessed you.
On your own
To reflect on
- Am I more attentive to how far my spouse still has to go than to the genuine growth already taking place?
Prayer focus
“Father, thank You for every evidence of growth in our marriage. Help us recognise sincere effort without ignoring truth. Give us patience, humility, and hope as You continue shaping both of us. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
