Growing Together, Not Apart · Day 1 of 21
Remaining Curious About Your Spouse

Scripture reading
“The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.”
Proverbs 18:15, KJV
Teaching lesson
He answered before she finished speaking.
After so many years together, he felt sure he knew what she would say. She had always enjoyed a busy weekend, so he had already accepted another invitation on their behalf.
This time, however, she wanted something different. Her week had been heavy, and what she needed most was a quiet evening with him.
He knew her habits. But he had not asked about her heart today.
Familiarity is a beautiful gift in marriage. There is comfort in knowing someone's favourite meal, recognising their laugh, and understanding the history behind a quiet look.
Yet familiarity can also persuade us that there is nothing left to learn.
Proverbs describes the wise person as someone who continues seeking knowledge. Wisdom keeps an attentive ear. It does not assume that yesterday's understanding is all that will ever be needed.
We can bring that humility into marriage.
Your spouse is still being shaped by life. Responsibilities, disappointments, answered prayers, new friendships, and lessons learned may be changing what matters to them.
Something they once enjoyed may now feel tiring. A concern they rarely mentioned may have become important. A desire they could not explain before may finally have words.
Remaining curious means allowing your spouse to tell you who they are today.
Ask with warmth. Listen without rushing to remind them of what they used to think. Let their answer surprise you without treating the difference as a problem.
Curiosity should feel like care, not an examination. Your spouse does not owe you an immediate explanation for every feeling. Some conversations need patience and a gentle invitation to return later.
As we begin these twenty-one days, make room to discover something you have stopped asking about.
You may have shared many years, but there is still a person beside you whose heart deserves your attention.
Let love keep you willing to learn.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Ask each other, "What has been on your heart lately that I may not have noticed?" Give each spouse a few uninterrupted minutes to answer, then share one thing you understand more clearly.
On your own
To reflect on
- Where have I allowed what I already know about my spouse to stop me from listening to who they are today?
Prayer focus
“Father, give us hearts that remain willing to learn. Help us listen with patience and ask with genuine care. Open our eyes to the changes we may have overlooked, and let our understanding of each other deepen as we walk with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
