Intentional Love · Day 17 of 21
Remembering the Little Things

Scripture reading
“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”
Hebrews 13:16, KJV
Teaching lesson
When he made tea, he reached automatically for her favourite cup. It was a familiar gesture, but that evening she smiled and told him how much she liked that he remembered. He had never realised that such a small detail meant anything to her.
Over time, marriage gives us opportunities to learn the details of another person's life.
We discover what comforts them, what they enjoy and which ordinary moments carry meaning. Those details can become part of the way we express care, especially when we continue to notice rather than assuming we already know everything.
The writer of Hebrews reminds believers to remember doing good and sharing with others. The word 'communicate' here refers to sharing, rather than simply speaking. Practical generosity belongs within a life that honours God.
Our homes give us daily opportunities to practise that generosity with attention.
Remembering a preference is one way of saying, 'I have been paying attention to you.' It may be allowing a little quiet after a demanding day or asking about a person your spouse has been concerned about.
Yet people change. Something your spouse enjoyed years ago may no longer be their preference. Stay curious enough to ask, 'Do you still like this?' Their answer gives you an opportunity to know them as they are now.
You may also discover that a gesture you hardly notice has become precious to them. Receive that information with gratitude. It helps you understand how your care is being experienced.
Let remembering be a kindness rather than a test. Neither of you will recall every detail perfectly. When something matters, speak about it clearly instead of expecting your spouse to read your mind.
Today, ask God to help you notice one familiar detail with fresh interest. There is still more to learn about the person beside you. Use what you learn to offer a small, personal expression of care.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Ask each other, 'What small thing I do helps you feel cared for?' Listen to the answer, check whether any preferences have changed and choose one detail to remember in the coming week.
On your own
To reflect on
- Am I still curious about my spouse's preferences, or am I relying only on what I learnt long ago?
Prayer focus
“Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of knowing each other through everyday life. Help us remain curious and attentive. Teach us to remember what matters, ask rather than assume and use what we learn to offer personal, thoughtful care. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
