Creating New Memories in This Season

Scripture reading

“And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.”

Ecclesiastes 3:13, KJV

Teaching lesson

They enjoyed talking about the trips they had taken years ago.

There were favourite photographs, familiar stories, and places they hoped to visit again. But whenever they spoke about doing something enjoyable now, the conversation ended with, "When things settle down."

For months, nothing did.

Then one Saturday, they took their breakfast outside and stayed talking after the cups were empty. The morning was simple, but later they both remembered how good it had felt to be unhurried together.

Ecclesiastes recognises the ability to enjoy the good of our labour as a gift from God. In a book that speaks honestly about life's limits and changing seasons, ordinary enjoyment still has a place.

We can receive that gift within marriage.

New memories do not always require travel, a large budget, or the kind of freedom you once had. They can grow from moments you choose to share with attention and gratitude.

A meal prepared together, an afternoon visit, a favourite song, or a quiet conversation can become part of the story you will remember.

Consider what is possible in your present circumstances.

If energy is limited, choose something gentle. If money is tight, keep it free. If your household is busy, look for a short opportunity that does not require everything else to be perfectly arranged.

Let both spouses have a voice in what would feel enjoyable. A carefully planned experience can still miss its purpose if one person feels hurried or obliged to perform happiness.

There is no need to make the moment impressive or turn it into something to display.

Be there together. Notice something good. Allow yourself to enjoy your spouse's company without measuring the occasion against an earlier season.

Your shared history deserves gratitude, and your present life deserves attention too.

Ask God to help you recognise the opportunities already within reach. There are still ordinary moments in which you can laugh, rest, and make a memory together.

Put it into practice

Together

Your challenge

Choose one simple shared experience that fits your time, energy, and budget, and set a time for it this week. Afterwards, each name one detail you would like to remember.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What condition have I been waiting for before allowing us to enjoy a meaningful moment together?

Prayer focus

“Father, thank You for the gift of shared life. Help us receive the good within this season and make room to enjoy one another. Free us from unnecessary pressure, and teach us to recognise the simple moments that can become treasured memories. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
