Revisiting Old Dreams

A creased sun-faded sheet unrolled over a newer plan, one stone holding each.

Shared Vision and Shared Goals

Day 14 of 21 · Saturday 19 September 2026

Scripture reading

“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

Psalm 37:5, KJV

Teaching lesson

They found an old notebook while clearing a cupboard.

Inside were hopes they had written early in their marriage. Some had become reality. Others had been postponed so often that neither spouse mentioned them anymore.

One dream still brought warmth. Another no longer fit the people they had become.

The notebook invited an honest question: what should they carry forward now?

Psalm 37 tells us to commit our way to the Lord and trust Him. Revisiting an old dream is not an attempt to force God to fulfil our original timetable.

Place the dream before Him again.

Some hopes were delayed by finances, caregiving, health, work, disappointment, or other responsibilities. A delay does not prove that the dream was foolish.

At the same time, faithfulness may require admitting that a dream has changed.

You are allowed to grieve what did not happen. You are also allowed to discover that God has formed new desires through the years.

Talk about old dreams without using them as evidence against your spouse.

Avoid, "We would have done this if you had…" Ask instead, "What did this dream mean to us, and does any part of it still belong in our shared direction?"

The original form may no longer be possible, but its deeper purpose may remain.

A dream of a particular home may have been about welcome. A dream of parenthood may carry a longing to nurture, guide, or leave a godly legacy. A dream of travel may have represented rest, discovery, or renewed friendship.

Those purposes can sometimes find new expression without denying the loss of what was first imagined.

Bring the dream into present reality. Consider your resources, responsibilities, and the direction God is giving both of you.

Choose whether to revive it, reshape it, wait with intention, or release it with peace.

Old dreams should not govern your marriage from the shadows.

Commit your way to the Lord together. Trust Him with what has been fulfilled, what remains unfinished, and what He may yet bring to life.

Together

Your challenge

Choose one old dream and talk about what it represented to each of you. Pray, then decide whether its next faithful step is to revive it, reshape it, wait intentionally, or release it.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Is there an old dream I have been silently grieving, blaming my spouse for, or refusing to place before God again?

Prayer focus

“Lord, we commit our way and our unfinished hopes to You. Help us revisit old dreams with honesty, tenderness, and trust. Show us what to revive, reshape, wait for, or release, and give us peace as You lead us forward together. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
