Choosing Friendship Daily

Becoming Best Friends in Marriage

Day 1 of 21 · Sunday 26 July 2026

Scripture reading

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Proverbs 17:17, KJV

Teaching lesson

A husband and wife can love each other deeply and still allow friendship to become buried beneath responsibilities.

The conversations become about bills, children, work, appointments, and what needs to be done next. They are functioning as a team, but they are no longer enjoying each other as friends.

Nothing dramatic happened.

Friendship simply stopped receiving attention.

Proverbs tells us that a friend loves at all times. Not only when life is light. Not only when there is energy for long conversations. A true friend remains present through ordinary days, difficult seasons, and changing emotions.

This kind of friendship is one of the quiet strengths of marriage.

Your spouse should not only be the person who shares your responsibilities. They should also be someone whose heart you continue to know, whose company you value, and whose burdens you are willing to carry.

But marital friendship does not remain strong by accident.

It grows when we choose to ask another question, share a little more, offer comfort, laugh together, or give our spouse our full attention. These actions may seem small, but they tell the heart, "I still value being close to you."

There may be seasons when friendship feels natural. At other times, stress, disappointment, or busyness may make closeness require more intention.

That does not mean the friendship is gone.

It may simply need to be chosen again.

A strong marriage is not only built by staying together. It is strengthened when two people keep learning how to walk through life as companions.

Today, do not wait for a special moment.

Choose friendship in one small way.

Together

Your challenge

Spend fifteen uninterrupted minutes together. Put away your phones and ask, "What has been on your heart lately that we have not had time to talk about?" Listen without rushing to solve anything.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have I been treating my spouse mainly as a partner in responsibilities, or am I still nurturing our friendship?

Prayer focus

“Father, thank You for the gift of friendship within marriage. Help us not to become so busy managing life that we stop knowing and enjoying each other. Teach us to remain present, caring, and close through every season. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
