Breaking Negative Patterns

Loving Your Spouse When You Feel Like Walking Away

Day 8 of 21 · Saturday 18 April 2026

By Sharlene Findley-Stewart · 1 minute read

Scripture reading

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 12:2, KJV

Teaching lesson

Every marriage develops patterns.

Some are healthy:

Encouragement

Support

Shared routines

Others slowly become destructive:

Criticism

Withdrawal

Defensiveness

A couple once described their arguments as “predictable.”She would raise a concern. He would become defensive. She would escalate. He would shut down.

Same issue.Same outcome.Every time.

What they didn’t realise was that they were not just having arguments, they were repeating a pattern.

Many couples get stuck not because they don’t love each other, but because they don’t know how to break the cycle.

Recognising patterns is key to change.

Change begins when even one person chooses to respond differently.

Imagine:

Instead of reacting, you pause

Instead of escalating, you soften

Instead of withdrawing, you stay present

One different response can interrupt the entire cycle.

Together

Your challenge

Identify one negative pattern in your relationship and agree on a new response for it.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What pattern do I keep repeating in conflict?
  • What would it look like for me to respond differently?

Prayer focus

“Pray for awareness and strength to break unhealthy patterns.”

With love and prayer,Sharlene
