Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse

Day 21 of 21 · Saturday 5 September 2026

Scripture reading

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”

Hebrews 10:24, KJV

Teaching lesson

Friends noticed something about their marriage.

The husband did not compete with his wife's strengths. The wife did not minimise her husband's contribution. They spoke truthfully about each other, celebrated growth, and made room for both people to flourish.

Their marriage was not perfect.

But it had become a place where each spouse was regularly built up.

Hebrews tells us to consider one another and provoke one another unto love and good works. The word consider carries intention. Encouragement becomes wiser when we pay attention to the person, their season, and the good God is inviting them to pursue.

A culture of admiration does more than create pleasant feelings.

It helps spouses remember who they are becoming.

Your words can strengthen courage, affirm integrity, and honour faithful labour.

Building up is not the same as maintaining constant positivity.

A healthy marriage still contains correction, confession, grief, boundaries, and difficult truth. Love does not praise what is destructive or remain silent where safety is at risk.

But even serious honesty should seek what is good: responsibility, healing, protection, repentance, and restored integrity where restoration is possible.

Ask what your marriage repeatedly produces.

Do your interactions leave each other more ashamed, cautious, and diminished? Or do they create room for truth, dignity, courage, and growth?

Both spouses share responsibility for the culture, but neither can control the other's choices. Begin with your own words, expressions, habits, and willingness to repair.

Notice what is honourable. Say it clearly. Receive it graciously. Protect it during disagreement. Repeat it until appreciation becomes familiar.

The goal is not admiration as performance.

It is a marriage in which both people are known honestly and still encouraged towards love and good works.

Build the kind of home where goodness is seen, growth is strengthened, and honour has a dependable voice.

Together

Your challenge

Write a short admiration statement for your spouse that names who they are, how they have grown, and what good you hope to keep building together.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What does the culture of our marriage currently produce in my spouse, and what personal change can I begin making today?

Prayer focus

“Father, make our marriage a place that builds up. Help us consider each other carefully, speak honour truthfully, and encourage love and good works. May our home reflect grace, courage, dignity, and growth. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
