Talking About Our Family Goals

Shared Vision and Shared Goals
Day 4 of 21 · Wednesday 9 September 2026
Scripture reading
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”
Psalm 127:1, KJV
Teaching lesson
They handled family matters whenever they became urgent.
A relative needed help. Household responsibilities had been neglected. Another weekend disappeared beneath errands and obligations.
They were constantly responding but rarely deciding together what their family life should become.
Psalm 127 reminds us that unless the Lord builds the house, human effort is spent in vain.
This does not tell couples to stop planning or working.
It teaches us to place our plans beneath God's wisdom and allow Him to shape the home we are building.
Family goals are not limited to parenting.
Every married couple forms a household culture, whether their home includes children, adult relatives, close friends, a blended family, or simply the two of them.
The question is not whether your family looks like someone else's.
The question is whether the relationships and responsibilities God has given you are being handled with unity, love, and purpose.
Talk about the atmosphere you want to protect. Consider how you will make room for rest, hospitality, care, celebration, boundaries, and time with one another.
Discuss the people who depend on you and the pressures that regularly enter your home.
Some goals will be practical. You may need clearer routines, a fairer sharing of responsibilities, or healthier boundaries with extended family.
Other goals will be relational. You may want your home to become a place where truth can be spoken, forgiveness is practised, and people feel welcomed without the marriage being neglected.
Do not build family life around appearances.
Build around what helps your household love God, care for people, and remain emotionally healthy.
Invite the Lord to build the house, then make choices that agree with the home you have asked Him to create.
Together
Your challenge
Choose one practical and one relational goal for your household this season. Decide what each spouse will do this week to help the home reflect those goals.
On your own
To reflect on
- Are our family routines shaped by prayerful purpose, or are we allowing urgency, outside expectations, and habit to decide how our home functions?
Prayer focus
“Lord, build our house according to Your wisdom. Help us care faithfully for the people and responsibilities You have given us. Bring unity to our decisions and make our home a place of truth, peace, love, and healthy belonging. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
