Habakkuk 2:2, KJV

Teaching lesson

One of the most impactful changes Joshua and I made in our marriage was becoming intentional about planning and communication in our finances.

Planning became pivotal in getting us on the same page.

When we started budgeting, setting goals, and tracking our finances, it created space for meaningful discussions. It helped us move from reacting to situations to planning for our future, whether it was retirement, travelling, or building savings.

Budgeting gave direction to our finances and purpose to our decisions.

At the same time, communication began to improve.

Instead of making isolated decisions, we started making decisions collaboratively. While we allowed some independence with small purchases, we made it a priority to discuss financial matters in all situations.

That balance created both trust and accountability.

Over time, we developed simple systems that helped us stay consistent. A monthly budget and shared goals became the foundation of our financial alignment.

We learned that unity in marriage does not happen by chance; it is built through intentional planning and consistent communication.

When both are present, clarity replaces confusion, and unity replaces division.

Together

Your challenge

Schedule a time to plan your next month’s finances together.

Set one shared goal and agree on how you will work toward it.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Do we take time to plan our finances together regularly?
  • Am I contributing to open and healthy communication about money?
  • What step can we take to become more aligned financially?

Prayer focus

“Lord, help us to plan wisely and communicate clearly in every area of our finances.Teach us to work together in unity and to make decisions that reflect wisdom and purpose.Guide us as we build a future that honours You and strengthens our marriage. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
