Shared Vision and Shared Goals · Day 17 of 21
Building Unity Around Purpose

Scripture reading
“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”
Philippians 2:2, KJV
Teaching lesson
Two spouses served their household in very different ways.
One loved planning, hospitality, and bringing people together. The other preferred quiet generosity, careful stewardship, and practical help offered without attention.
At times, their differences made them wonder whether they were truly moving in the same direction.
Then they recognised that unity did not require identical personalities or identical assignments.
Both wanted their marriage and home to reflect faith, welcome, integrity, and service. Their methods were different, but their purpose could be shared.
Paul's call to be of one accord and one mind is not a command for spouses to erase individuality.
Biblical unity grows when two people bring their distinct gifts under a common love and a God-honouring purpose.
A shared purpose answers the deeper question beneath your goals: Why has God joined our lives, and what do we want our union to contribute?
Your answer may include creating a peaceful home, practising generous stewardship, strengthening others, growing in Christ, offering hospitality, or leaving a legacy of faithfulness.
Couples without children build family direction and legacy too. The values you embody, the people you encourage, and the love you practise can reach far beyond your household.
Purpose helps you evaluate opportunities. A good activity may still be wrong for this season if it repeatedly pulls your marriage away from what you have agreed matters most.
Purpose also steadies you when roles change.
Jobs, health, capacity, and responsibilities may shift, but the deeper reason behind your life together can remain.
Take time to name that reason in simple words.
Do not force a polished statement. Begin with the values and people God has placed on both your hearts.
Unity becomes practical when shared purpose shapes your calendar, spending, service, rest, and relationships.
You do not have to do everything alike. You simply need to keep offering your different strengths toward the same faithful direction.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Complete this sentence together: “We believe God wants our marriage and household to be known for…” Choose three words, then name one action that would express them this week.
On your own
To reflect on
- Am I honouring the different way my spouse contributes to our shared purpose, or expecting unity to look like sameness?
Prayer focus
“Father, make us of one accord and one mind in the purposes that honour You. Show us how our different gifts can serve in one direction, and let our marriage leave a faithful legacy of love. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
With love and prayer,Sharlene
