Intentional Love · Day 18 of 21
Becoming Dependable in the Way We Love

Scripture reading
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:58, KJV
Teaching lesson
After a meaningful conversation, they had agreed to check in with each other each evening. The first few days went well. Then one evening was missed, followed by another. Both appreciated the original conversation, but the new practice was quietly disappearing.
Beginning with enthusiasm can feel easier than continuing through ordinary days.
Paul closes his teaching about the resurrection with an encouragement to remain steadfast in the Lord's work. Because of Christ's victory, faithful labour has meaning. His words offer hope that reaches beyond how rewarding an effort feels at a particular moment.
As we seek to honour Christ in marriage, that hope can encourage steady care.
Dependability grows when our spouse experiences that what we say is usually followed by what we do. It can be expressed through a modest promise kept repeatedly, even after the excitement of beginning has passed.
Choose something that fits your life. A brief check-in that you can sustain may serve your marriage better than an elaborate routine that leaves you both discouraged.
Be clear about the agreement. What are you committing to, and when will it happen? Discuss what you will do when the day changes unexpectedly. Clear expectations give both of you a fair understanding of the promise.
There will be times when you forget or fall short. Acknowledge the missed commitment and begin again. Dependability includes taking responsibility when something has not gone as planned.
If the same promise repeatedly proves unrealistic, revisit it together. Adjusting an agreement honestly can be more helpful than making the same assurance with no change in circumstances.
Do not use consistency to keep a record against your spouse. Begin by examining the commitments within your own control and appreciating the care they already offer.
Today, ask God to strengthen your willingness to continue. Choose one simple expression of love that you can practise beyond this devotional, and let your spouse know what they can reasonably expect from you.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Each choose one manageable expression of care to practise over the next week. Agree on when it will happen and how you will communicate if plans change. Review it together at the end of the week.
On your own
To reflect on
- What can my spouse depend on me to do, and which commitment needs more honest follow-through?
Prayer focus
“Heavenly Father, help us become dependable in the care we offer. Give us patience to continue when the days feel ordinary and humility to acknowledge missed commitments. Guide us towards promises we can keep and help us begin again when we fall short. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
