Noticing Character, Not Only Performance
Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse
Day 5 of 7 · Thursday 20 August 2026
Scripture reading
“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. outward…: Heb. eyes”
1 Samuel 16:7, KJV
Teaching lesson
She felt most appreciated when everything was completed.
When the house was organised, the responsibilities were handled, and everyone was satisfied, her effort was noticed.
He felt valued when he was producing, providing, or solving a problem.
On the days they were tired, struggling, or less effective, both wondered whether they still mattered in the same way.
Performance is easy to notice because it produces visible results.
Character is often quieter.
In First Samuel, God reminded Samuel that people look at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. While we cannot see as perfectly as God sees, marriage invites us to notice more than what is accomplished.
Notice the integrity behind a difficult decision.
Notice the patience required to begin again.
Notice compassion, humility, courage, faithfulness, generosity, and the willingness to grow.
These qualities may not complete a task, but they reveal the person your spouse is becoming.
When appreciation is tied only to performance, love can begin to feel conditional.
A spouse may quietly believe, "I am valuable when I am useful."
But marriage should also communicate, "I value who you are, including on the days when your strength is limited."
This does not remove responsibility. Character includes honesty, dependability, and a willingness to address patterns that harm the relationship.
Grace is not an excuse for avoiding growth.
It is a way of seeing the whole person while growth happens.
Look beneath today's results.
Your spouse may be carrying more than you realise and still showing qualities worthy of honour.
Appreciate the work of their hands, but do not overlook the heart from which that work comes.
Together
Your challenge
Name one character quality you admire in your spouse and give a specific example of when you saw it. Focus on who they are, not only what they achieved.
On your own
To reflect on
- Does my spouse feel valued for their character and presence, or mainly when they perform in ways that benefit me?
Prayer focus
“Father, teach us to look beyond visible results and recognise the heart. Help us honour integrity, faithfulness, courage, humility, and growth in each other. Let our love communicate value even in seasons of weakness. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
