Remembering Why You First Connected

Becoming Best Friends in Marriage

Day 13 of 21 · Friday 7 August 2026

Scripture reading

“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.”

Proverbs 5:18, KJV

Teaching lesson

They found an old photograph and began talking about the early days of their relationship.

They remembered the conversations that lasted for hours, the qualities they admired, and the small moments that made them realise this person was becoming important.

For a little while, they saw each other through grateful eyes again.

Marriage adds many chapters to a relationship.

Over time, disappointments, responsibilities, and familiarity can become louder than the memories of what first drew two people together.

Proverbs encourages a husband to rejoice with the wife of his youth. There is something valuable about remembering the person we gladly chose and the joy that once felt easy to recognise.

Remembering does not mean pretending the early years were perfect.

It does not erase wounds or excuse problems that need attention.

It helps us recover perspective.

Before your spouse became the person who forgot something, disappointed you, or developed habits that frustrate you, they were someone whose presence brought joy.

Some of those qualities may still be there, hidden beneath pressure and routine.

Think about what first made conversation feel natural. Remember the kindness, humour, strength, faith, tenderness, or determination you noticed.

Then ask yourself whether you still acknowledge those qualities.

Friendship is renewed when appreciation becomes visible again.

Do not keep the memory to yourself.

Tell your spouse what you remember. Let them hear that there are parts of your story you still treasure.

The past is not where your marriage must live.

But remembering God's faithfulness in your beginning can help you approach the present with renewed gratitude and choose closeness again.

Together

Your challenge

Look at an old photograph or recall an early memory together. Each person should name one quality that first drew you close and one way you still see that quality today.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have present frustrations caused me to overlook the qualities I once valued deeply in my spouse?

Prayer focus

“Lord, thank You for the story You have given us. Help us remember the good we first saw in each other and recognise it again today. Renew our gratitude, affection, and friendship. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
