Strengthening Friendship in Marriage

Praying with Love

Day 9 of 21 · Sunday 31 May 2026

Scripture reading

“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Proverbs 17:17, KJV

Teaching lesson

They were married.

They shared a home.

They made decisions together.

They handled responsibilities.

They cared for the family.

But somewhere along the way, they stopped feeling like friends.

They talked about schedules.

Bills.

Children.

Work.

Church.

Things to fix.

Things to buy.

Things to remember.

But not much about the heart.

Sometimes marriage becomes so full of responsibility that friendship gets pushed to the side.

The laughter becomes less.

The light conversations disappear.

The little moments of enjoyment become rare.

And two people who love each other can begin to feel more like partners in management than companions in life.

But friendship matters in marriage.

It gives warmth to the relationship.

It reminds us that we are not only called to live together, but to enjoy each other.

To notice each other.

To laugh together.

To share ordinary moments.

To be gentle with each other’s heart.

A strong marriage needs more than serious conversations.

It also needs kindness.

Playfulness.

Interest.

Appreciation.

The simple joy of being together.

Sometimes friendship is rebuilt in small ways.

A walk.

A shared meal.

A message during the day.

A question asked with genuine interest.

A moment of laughter.

A decision to put down the phone and be fully present.

Prayer helps us see our spouse again.

Not only as the person who forgot something.

Not only as the person who disappointed us.

Not only as the person we need something from.

But as the friend God has placed beside us.

When friendship grows, the marriage becomes softer.

The home feels warmer.

And love has more room to breathe.

Together

Your challenge

Do one simple thing today just to enjoy each other. No agenda. No serious discussion. Just connection.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have I been treating my spouse more like a task partner than a treasured friend?

Prayer focus

“Lord, strengthen the friendship in our marriage. Help us to enjoy each other again, laugh together, listen with interest, and value the gift of companionship. Amen.”
