Thanking God for the Gift of Friendship

Becoming Best Friends in Marriage

Day 21 of 21 · Saturday 15 August 2026

Scripture reading

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

James 1:17, KJV

Teaching lesson

Over the past twenty-one days, the couple had become more attentive.

They had talked, listened, laughed, asked better questions, and begun creating rhythms of connection.

Their marriage was not perfect.

But they were noticing the gift within it again.

James reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. Friendship within marriage is one of those gifts, but familiarity can cause us to stop seeing it with gratitude.

We notice what is missing.

We remember what disappointed us.

We become accustomed to the person who shares our days and forget that their companionship is worthy of thanks.

Gratitude does not deny the areas where marriage still needs growth.

It changes what receives our attention.

It helps us recognise the spouse who stayed beside us through a difficult season, listened when we were discouraged, celebrated a small victory, prayed for us, or simply continued sharing ordinary life.

Do not keep gratitude silent.

Tell your spouse what their friendship has meant to you. Be specific. Thank them for a quality, a memory, a sacrifice, or a way they have made life's journey less lonely.

Then thank God together.

The friendship you have today may not look exactly as it did at the beginning. It may be quieter, wiser, and shaped by challenges you never expected.

That does not make it less valuable.

It may be evidence of grace.

Continue protecting what these days have helped you notice.

Keep asking questions. Keep creating time. Keep speaking warmly. Keep repairing when distance appears.

A spouse who remains a friend is not a gift to take for granted.

Receive the friendship within your marriage with gratitude, and continue giving God room to deepen it.

Together

Your challenge

Share three specific things you appreciate about your spouse's friendship. Then pray together, thanking God for your journey and asking Him to protect your companionship.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What part of my spouse's friendship have I become accustomed to instead of receiving it with gratitude?

Prayer focus

“Father, thank You for the gift of friendship within our marriage. Forgive us for the ways we have taken each other for granted. Help us protect, enjoy, and deepen our companionship through every season. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
