When Anger Becomes a Pattern
Addictions
Day 6 of 21 · Thursday 7 May 2026
Scripture reading
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”
James 1:19-20, KJV
Teaching lesson
It wasn’t always like this.
In the beginning, conversations felt safe. Gentle. Understanding.
But over time, something changed.
Every disagreement became heated.Every misunderstanding turned into tension.
It wasn’t just the issues; it was the response.
Anger had become the default.
Not always loud. Not always explosive.Sometimes it showed up as sharp words, cold silence, or subtle irritation.
But the impact was the same, distance.
One spouse eventually said, “I don’t feel safe talking anymore.”
That’s what repeated anger does, it teaches your spouse to withdraw.
Scripture reminds us to be “slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
Because unchecked anger doesn’t just express frustration,It creates an environment where love struggles to grow.
Often, anger is not the root. It’s the surface.
Underneath it may be hurt, disappointment, unmet expectations, or even exhaustion.
But when anger becomes a habit, it blocks understanding.
Healing begins when we choose to pause instead of reacting.
Together
Your challenge
When tension rises today, agree to pause before responding, take a breath, then speak calmly.
On your own
To reflect on
- What is usually beneath my anger?
Prayer focus
“Ask God to help you respond with patience, gentleness, and self-control.”
