Growing Together, Not Apart · Day 4 of 21
When Familiarity Becomes Complacency

Scripture reading
“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:12, KJV
Teaching lesson
They were no longer arguing as often.
The house ran smoothly, responsibilities were handled, and most evenings followed a familiar routine. When someone asked about their marriage, they said they were fine.
Then one evening, a simple question gave them pause: "When did we last talk about something that mattered to us?"
Neither could remember.
Peace had become an assumption that the relationship needed little attention.
Paul's words in Philippians concern his pursuit of Christ. Even after years of faithful service, he did not consider himself to have arrived. He continued responding to the One who had taken hold of his life.
That humble willingness to keep growing has something to teach us in marriage.
Years together are precious, but they do not remove our need to learn. A stable home can still contain feelings that remain unspoken and patterns that no one has thought to examine.
Complacency often settles quietly. We assume our spouse will understand the missed conversation. We stop asking whether an old arrangement still works. We postpone attention because nothing seems urgent.
Over time, a relationship that feels secure can receive less care than everything else around it.
A quiet season is not itself a problem. Rest, familiar routines, and comfortable silence can be signs of deep companionship. The question is whether both spouses still feel able to share what matters and ask for what they need.
Pause long enough to find out.
Ask whether there is an area of your marriage that you have stopped tending. Receive the answer without using all the things that are going well to dismiss the concern.
You do not need to manufacture a crisis to make a meaningful adjustment.
Thank God for the steadiness you share, and ask Him to show you where fresh attention is needed.
There is still room for love to deepen within the life you already know.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Each name one part of your relationship that has received little attention lately. Together, choose one small way to care for one of those areas today.
On your own
To reflect on
- What have I stopped tending in our marriage because I assume it will remain strong without my attention?
Prayer focus
“Lord, thank You for the comfort of a shared life. Keep us attentive to the relationship You have entrusted to us. Show us where we have become careless, and help us respond with willing hearts and practical love. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
