Intentional Love · Day 11 of 21
When “Later” Becomes a Habit

Scripture reading
“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
James 4:17, KJV
Teaching lesson
They had been meaning to talk for several days. Each evening brought another reason to postpone it. The matter was not an emergency, so it kept moving behind everything else. Eventually, 'We will talk later' began to sound like a conversation that would never happen.
Delay can become a habit before we recognise its effect.
There are genuine reasons to wait. A tired spouse may need rest before an important discussion. An unexpected responsibility may require attention. The concern comes when we repeatedly postpone something we know needs care without making a realistic plan to return.
James writes about people making confident plans for tomorrow without acknowledging their dependence on God. He ends that passage by reminding his readers that knowing the good and failing to do it carries responsibility.
His words invite honest reflection about the response already within our reach.
In marriage, we may know that an apology is needed, a promise remains unfulfilled or a concern deserves attention. Yet discomfort can make postponement feel easier than beginning.
Ask yourself gently what is behind the delay. Are you uncertain how to start? Afraid of hearing disappointment? Have you agreed to more than you can realistically manage? Naming the difficulty can help you choose an honest next step.
If you cannot keep a promise as originally made, speak about it. Acknowledging the limit gives you both something real to work with. Silence leaves your spouse waiting and wondering.
Choose a manageable beginning. Send the message you promised, apologise for the delay or agree on a specific time for the conversation. Allow enough room for what the matter requires.
This is an invitation to respond faithfully, not to rush every unresolved issue into one evening. Some concerns will need several conversations.
Today, ask God for courage to begin the good you have been putting off. Let 'later' become a clear next step that you are prepared to take and keep.
Put it into practice
Together
Your challenge
Each identify one small commitment you have postponed. Complete it today if possible, or acknowledge the delay and agree on a specific, realistic time to follow through.
On your own
To reflect on
- What loving response have I been delaying, and what is making it difficult for me to begin?
Prayer focus
“Heavenly Father, give us honesty about the things we keep postponing. Help us recognise our limits and take responsibility for our promises. Grant us courage to begin what needs attention and wisdom to make commitments we can faithfully keep. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
