Letting Go of Harmful Habits and Behaviours

Letting Go

Day 5 of 7 · Wednesday 18 March 2026

Scripture reading

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”

Hebrews 12:1, KJV

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”

James 1:19, KJV

Teaching lesson

Another important lesson Joshua and I had to learn in our marriage was letting go of habits and behaviours that were quietly limiting our growth.

Some of these were not obvious at first, but over time we began to recognise their impact.

For Joshua, it was holding onto grudges and struggling with impatience. For me, it was avoiding difficult conversations. Instead of addressing issues directly, I would sometimes choose silence, hoping things would resolve on their own.

But they didn’t.

One of the turning points for us was when we realised that issues were not being resolved. The same matters would resurface, and it became clear that avoiding or delaying conversations was not protecting our relationship. It was weakening it.

That realisation brought conviction.

We began to understand that healthy marriages require intentional effort and a willingness to change.

Over time, Joshua and I started developing new habits that strengthened our relationship. We became more intentional about communicating openly, even when the conversations were uncomfortable. We prioritised praying together, which helped soften our hearts and bring clarity. We also made a conscious effort to protect our time together and hold each other accountable.

Letting go of harmful habits is not always easy, but it is necessary.

Growth in marriage happens when both individuals are willing to recognise what needs to change and take steps toward something better.

Together

Your challenge

Identify one habit or behaviour that may be affecting your relationship.

Commit to replacing it with a healthier habit that strengthens your connection.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Is there a habit I am holding onto that may be affecting our marriage?
  • Do I avoid addressing issues, or do I communicate openly and honestly?
  • What practical step can I take to strengthen our relationship this week?

Prayer focus

“Lord, reveal any habits or behaviours in us that may be limiting the growth of our marriage.Give us the courage to change and the wisdom to build healthier patterns.Help us to communicate openly, love patiently, and grow together in unity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
