Scripture reading

Psalms 62:8, KJV

Teaching lesson

They had expectations.

Some spoken.

Some silent.

Some carried from childhood.

Some shaped by what they saw in other marriages.

Some built from dreams they had before the wedding day.

But marriage did not always look the way they imagined.

There were moments of joy.

But there were also disappointments.

The support that felt missing.

The affection that changed.

The conversations that became harder.

The plans that took longer.

The needs that went unnoticed.

The prayers that seemed unanswered.

Disappointment can settle quietly in a marriage.

It does not always sound like anger.

Sometimes it sounds like,“I expected more.”

“I thought by now we would be different.”

“I thought you would understand.”

“I thought this would be easier.”

When disappointment is not brought to God, it can become resentment.

And resentment slowly changes the way we see our spouse.

We stop seeing the person.

We only see what they did not do.

We only see what is missing.

We only see what still hurts.

But prayer helps us bring disappointment into the presence of God before it poisons the heart.

Prayer does not deny the pain.

It gives the pain somewhere safe to go.

It helps us say,“Lord, this is what I hoped for.”

“This is what hurt me.”

“This is what I need help to release.”

“This is what we need wisdom to face together.”

Every marriage will have disappointments.

But disappointment does not have to become distance.

It can become a place where honesty grows.

Where expectations are spoken.

Where understanding deepens.

Where God teaches both hearts to love with maturity.

Sometimes the marriage we imagined has to give way to the marriage God is teaching us to build.

One conversation.

One prayer.

One act of grace at a time.

Together

Your challenge

Share one expectation you have carried quietly. Speak kindly, and listen with care.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What disappointment have I been holding in my heart instead of bringing to God?

Prayer focus

“Lord, help me to bring my disappointments to You. Keep resentment from growing in my heart. Teach us to speak honestly, listen lovingly, and build our marriage with grace, patience, and hope. Amen.”
