Choosing Closeness Today

Becoming Best Friends in Marriage

Day 20 of 21 · Friday 14 August 2026

Scripture reading

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

Hebrews 3:13, KJV

Teaching lesson

They kept waiting for a better time to reconnect.

After the busy week.

After the financial pressure eased.

After they felt less tired.

After the other person made the first move.

But each delay made distance feel more normal.

Hebrews urges believers to encourage one another daily while it is called "Today." There is wisdom in responding to the opportunity that is in front of us.

Marriage is lived today.

A small step today can change the direction of tomorrow.

Not only in the vows spoken years ago or the plans made for the future.

Friendship grows through the choices available in the present moment.

Choosing closeness today does not require a grand gesture.

It may mean sitting beside your spouse instead of across the room. It may mean sending a thoughtful message, offering an apology, asking a better question, or reaching for their hand.

Small choices become important because they interrupt the habit of distance.

Closeness cannot be forced.

An invitation is different from a demand. Your spouse may need time, especially where there has been hurt, exhaustion, or emotional strain.

But you can still make your posture clear.

"I am available for connection."

"I care about how we are doing."

"I want to take a step towards you."

Do not allow pride to make you wait endlessly for your spouse to begin.

Humility is often willing to make the first gentle move without keeping score.

You cannot repair every part of a relationship in one day.

But you can choose one action that makes friendship more possible than it was yesterday.

Tomorrow will bring another opportunity.

For now, choose closeness today.

Together

Your challenge

Ask each other, "What is one small thing we could do today to feel more connected?" Choose one answer you can act on before the day ends.

On your own

To reflect on

  • What simple act of pride, distraction, or delay do I need to release so I can move towards my spouse today?

Prayer focus

“Father, help us not to postpone the connection our marriage needs. Give us humility to make the first gentle move and patience to honour each other's pace. Teach us to choose closeness today. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
