Protecting Admiration During Disagreement

Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse

Day 18 of 21 · Wednesday 2 September 2026

Scripture reading

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Ephesians 4:29, KJV

Teaching lesson

They respected each other when life was calm.

But during disagreement, their language changed.

A forgotten task became proof that one spouse was irresponsible. A different opinion became evidence that the other was selfish. In the desire to win the moment, both spoke as though nothing admirable remained.

Conflict can narrow our vision.

Ephesians instructs us to refuse corrupt communication and speak what is useful for edifying. Even correction can be expressed in a way that protects dignity and ministers grace.

Protecting admiration during disagreement does not mean offering compliments while avoiding the issue.

It means refusing to rewrite your spouse's entire character because of one painful moment.

Address the action clearly: "When that decision was made without me, I felt disregarded." Avoid turning the concern into a verdict: "You have never respected me."

One statement invites responsibility.

The other erases every contrary example and makes repair harder.

Remembering what you admire can steady your tone. The person across from you may be wrong in this matter and still be someone who has shown loyalty, generosity, courage, or care in many others.

This balanced view helps truth remain truthful.

Do not use admirable qualities to excuse abuse, coercion, repeated deception, addiction, or unsafe behaviour. Serious patterns require appropriate boundaries, protection, accountability, and wise help.

For ordinary conflict, resist contempt, exaggeration, and character attacks. If you speak disrespectfully, repair the damage without defending your tone because your concern was valid.

Say what was wrong, but do not deny what is good.

A strong marriage does not preserve admiration by avoiding every disagreement. It preserves admiration by handling disagreement without treating the person as the enemy.

Let your words confront the problem while still protecting the worth of your spouse.

Together

Your challenge

Discuss one current concern using language that describes the behaviour and its impact without attacking character. End by naming one quality you still respect in each other.

On your own

To reflect on

  • When I am hurt or frustrated, do my words address the issue or erase everything admirable about my spouse?

Prayer focus

“Lord, guard our mouths when emotions rise. Help us speak truth without corrupting dignity, confront problems without contempt, and remember the good even while addressing what needs to change. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
