Teaching lesson

There was a time when they laughed easily.

They had private jokes, playful conversations, and ordinary moments that became memorable simply because they enjoyed being together.

Then life became heavier.

Responsibilities increased. Conversations became serious. Without noticing it, laughter became rare.

Marriage needs room for joy.

Proverbs describes a merry heart as medicine. Laughter does not remove every problem, but it can bring relief to a home carrying pressure. It reminds a couple that their relationship is more than the difficulties they are trying to solve.

Sometimes we postpone enjoyment until everything is settled.

When the finances improve.

When work becomes easier.

When the children need less.

But if joy must wait for a trouble-free season, it may wait for a very long time.

Healthy laughter is not sarcasm at your spouse's expense. It does not mock vulnerability or avoid a conversation that needs to happen.

It creates warmth, not embarrassment.

It says, "I still enjoy being with you."

You do not need an expensive outing to restore playfulness. Tell an old story. Watch something that makes you both laugh. Dance in the kitchen. Revisit a place connected to a happy memory. Be willing to be a little less serious.

Friendship becomes heavy when a couple only meets around problems and responsibilities.

Joy gives the relationship space to breathe.

There will be seasons that require tears, patience, and difficult work. Yet even then, a shared smile can become a small reminder that hardship has not taken everything.

Protect the laughter that belongs to your marriage.

It may be part of the medicine God uses to restore warmth.

Together

Your challenge

Do one simple thing that usually makes you both laugh. Afterwards, share a favourite funny memory from your relationship and explain why it still brings you joy.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have pressure and responsibility taken away the playfulness we once enjoyed? What could I do to help restore it?

Prayer focus

“Lord, thank You for the gift of joy. Restore warmth and laughter in our marriage. Keep our humour kind, and help us enjoy the life we are building together even in demanding seasons. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
