Practising Daily Appreciation

Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse

Day 3 of 7 · Tuesday 18 August 2026

Scripture reading

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18, KJV

Teaching lesson

He handled something for the family that he had done many times before.

She noticed, but said nothing.

Later, she made an adjustment that helped his day go more smoothly. He appreciated it internally, but assumed she already knew.

Both spouses were grateful.

Neither felt appreciated.

Appreciation has the greatest relational impact when it is expressed.

First Thessalonians teaches us to give thanks in everything. Gratitude is not reserved for dramatic answers to prayer or major celebrations. It can become a daily way of recognising God's goodness and the contributions of the person beside us.

In marriage, repeated acts of love can become almost invisible.

The meal is prepared again.

The child is cared for again.

The difficult day is endured again.

What is consistent can easily be mistaken for what is automatic.

But familiar effort still carries value.

Daily appreciation says, "I see what you do, and I do not take it for granted."

It also reaches beyond performance. Thank your spouse for their patience, honesty, courage, faith, tenderness, humour, or perseverance. Appreciation becomes deeper when it recognises character as well as contribution.

Be specific.

Instead of only saying, "Thank you for everything," explain what you noticed and why it mattered.

Specific gratitude feels believable because it shows you paid attention.

Don't use appreciation to manipulate your spouse or soften them before making a request. Let it stand on its own as a sincere gift.

A thankful marriage is not a perfect marriage.

It is one in which the good is named often enough for both spouses to know that their presence, effort, and character still matter.

Together

Your challenge

Notice three things your spouse does or demonstrates today. Express appreciation for at least one of them using the words, "I appreciate that you… because…"

On your own

To reflect on

  • What contribution or quality in my spouse have I benefited from repeatedly without expressing sincere thanks?

Prayer focus

“Father, make us attentive and thankful. Forgive us for the ways familiarity has caused us to overlook each other. Teach us to express sincere, specific appreciation and create an atmosphere of gratitude in our marriage. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
