Seeing the Good Again

Liking, Appreciating and Enjoying Your Spouse

Day 2 of 7 · Monday 17 August 2026

Scripture reading

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. honest: or, venerable

Philippians 4:8, KJV

Teaching lesson

She could quickly name what frustrated her about him.

He could easily describe the habits he wished she would change.

Neither spouse was inventing the problems.

But disappointment had become the lens through which they viewed everything else.

When one spouse did something thoughtful, they overlooked it. When they made a mistake, it seemed to confirm every negative conclusion already formed.

What we repeatedly focus on begins shaping how we see the person in front of us.

Philippians tells us to meditate on what is true, noble, lovely, virtuous, and praiseworthy. This is not an invitation to deny reality. It calls us to give worthy things their proper attention.

A balanced view of your spouse includes weaknesses and strengths.

Frustration becomes dangerous when it reduces a whole person to their most disappointing moments.

Your spouse may be forgetful and still generous.

They may communicate differently and still care deeply.

They may be growing slowly while still showing faithfulness in ways you no longer notice.

Seeing the good again requires intention.

Look for the effort behind an imperfect action. Notice a quality that has remained steady. Remember a way your spouse supported you when life was difficult.

This does not mean calling harmful behaviour good. Wisdom still names dishonesty, cruelty, neglect, or unsafe conduct truthfully and seeks appropriate help.

But ordinary imperfections should not erase everything worthy of appreciation.

Sometimes the marriage has not lost all its good.

The good has simply stopped receiving attention.

Ask God to help you see clearly again – not through denial, resentment, or unrealistic expectation, but through truth and grace.

Together

Your challenge

Each spouse should name three good qualities or recent actions they have noticed in the other. Receive the appreciation without minimising it or returning a complaint.

On your own

To reflect on

  • Have I trained my attention to search for what is wrong while becoming slow to recognise what is still good?

Prayer focus

“Lord, clear our vision where frustration has made us unfair or ungrateful. Help us recognise what is true, lovely, and praiseworthy in each other while addressing real concerns with wisdom. Renew our perspective through grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
