When Habits Turn into Bondage (Substance Dependency)
Addictions
Day 8 of 21 · Saturday 9 May 2026
Scripture reading
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
Galatians 5:1, KJV
Teaching lesson
What began as relief slowly became reliance.
A drink to unwind.Something to “take the edge off.”A way to cope with stress, pressure, or emotional weight.
At first, it seemed manageable.
But over time, it began to take more than it gave.
Conversations changed.Reactions changed.Trust began to weaken.
One spouse felt alone, not because the other had left physically, but because something else had taken control.
Scripture reminds us: “Stand fast… and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”
Addiction doesn’t just affect the individual; it affects the marriage.
It changes the atmosphere. It impacts trust. It alters the connection.
But here’s the hope; bondage is not the final story.
Freedom is possible.
Not through denial but through honesty, support, and surrender to God.
There is no shame in acknowledging the struggle. There is only strength in choosing to confront it.
Together
Your challenge
Create a safe space for honest conversation, without judgment, without accusation.
On your own
To reflect on
- Is there anything in my life that I depend on more than I should?
Prayer focus
“Pray for freedom, strength, and healing: individually and as a couple.”
With love and prayer,Sharlene
